This is an example of an “English Style” gown, an alternative to the sack-back gown. The English style had a fitted back, much better in my opinion, although the sack-gown does make you look a bit like a Rococo Superhero with a built-in cape and all. This gown was made in the 1740s, and then altered in the 1750s to update the style of the bodice and sleeves.
